English lesson 8

(1) When you ask someone to eat slowly, you should not say, ‘Eat slowly.’ That is rude. It sounds as if you ORDER him to eat slowly.

The correct way to say it is ‘Take your time.’


当你叫人慢慢吃,在英语你不应该说‘Eat slowly.’这是很粗鲁的.这听起来好像你命令他必须慢慢吃.

正确的说法是‘Take your time.’

(2) When someone says, ‘You don’t say.’ (it does not mean he asks you to shut up or keep quiet)

It means ‘Really?’

当一个人说
, ‘You don’t say.’他不是叫你不要说话,不是叫你安静.

它的含义是
‘Really?’"真的吗"

(3) When someone says, ‘You can say that again.’, it means ‘I absolutely agree with you.’ or ‘I can’t agree with you more.’

当一个人说
,‘You can say that again.’它的含义是‘I absolutely agree with you.’ or ‘I can’t agree with you more.’"我完全同意你的意见"

(5) When you have a meal with someone , he says, ‘It is on me.’ It means he wants to pay for you.

The restaurant and the bar are included in ‘house’. Therefore ‘On the house.’ means the restaurant and the bar will pay for you. In other words, it is free of charge.

当你和别人吃一餐时,他说
, ‘It is on me.’含义是他要付钱.

餐厅和酒吧属于‘house’的范围. 所以 ‘On the house.’ 含义是餐厅和酒吧会付钱.这是免费的.

(6) If you go shopping and if you decide to buy something, it is wrong to say,‘I will (buy) this.’ You should say, ‘I will (take) this.’

当你去逛街,你决定要买某样东西,你说
‘I will (buy) this.’是错误的.你应该说, ‘I will (take) this.’

(7) When someone says, ‘I don’t buy that.’, it means ‘I don’t believe that.’

When someone says, ‘Okay. I will buy that.’, it means ‘Okay . I agree.’

When someone says, ‘Bei Jing University, the best buy.’, it means ‘the best choice’.

When someone says, ‘Buy American, buy American.’, it means ‘Support American, support American.’

当一个人说, ‘I don’t buy that.’, 含义是 ‘I don’t believe that.’"我不相信"

当一个人说, ‘Okay. I will buy that.’, 含义是‘Okay . I agree.’"好的,我同意"

当一个人说, ‘Bei Jing University, the best buy.’.
"the best buy"的含义是‘the best choice’(最好的选择).

当一个人说, ‘Buy American, buy American.’, 含义是 ‘Support American, support American.’(支持美国人,支持美国人)

(8) When someone calls you ‘Chinaman.’ or calls you ‘Chink’, it is usually offensive. He insults you.

当一个人叫你
‘Chinaman.’或者叫你 ‘Chink’,这是粗鲁的.他侮辱你.

(9) A lot of people are not sure when to use ‘Just have a look.’ or ‘Just having a look.’

很多人不知道
‘Just have a look.’ 和 ‘Just having a look.’的分别

(a) We will say ‘Just without ing’ when we invite somebody to do something.

我们说
‘Just 没有 ing’当我们邀请别人做一些事情

For example,列如:

Just have a look.
Just try it.
Just eat it.



(b) We will say ‘Just plus ing’ when we are telling people what (we are doing now).

我们说
‘Just 加  ing’当我们告诉别人我们正在做什么

For example,列如:
Just kidding. (It is a short form. It is taken from a sentence. The complete sentence is "I am just kidding now.")(这是简化了的.它是从一个句子摘录下来的.完整的句子是
"I am just kidding now.""我正在开玩笑")

Just asking. (It is a short form. It is taken from a sentence. The complete sentence is "I am just asking now.")
(这是简化了的.它是从一个句子摘录下来的.完整的句子是"I am just asking now.""我正在问")

Just having a look. (It is a short form. It is taken from a sentence. The complete sentence is I am just having a look now.)

‘I see.’不应该翻译成“我看到你说的意思了。”,不是直译。

‘I see.’应该翻译成“原来如此。”

如果你要说:“有人拍我肩膀。”你不可以说, “He patted my shoulder.”

因为在英语惯用法 (idiomatic expression) 中,是先以整体为受词才用介词指出部位。所以应该说, “He patted me on my shoulder.”

(1) 她亲了他的双颊

She kissed both of his cheeks. (WRONG)
She kissed him on both cheeks. (RIGHT)


(2) 他拉住她的袖子

He pulled her sleeves. (WRONG)
He pulled her by the sleeves. (RIGHT)


(3) 他胸膛挨了一枪

His chest has been shot. (WRONG)
He has been shot in the chest. (RIGHT)
