haha as I girl, I must say that you had definitely stepped on her tail just by making a comment on her looks. Never ever tell a girl that she is unattractive straight to her face (even if it is true), you guys may not know, but girls consider it as a negative remark. To me, I'd rather listen to you talking at my back LOL than telling me directly. Sometimes, it has something more to do with self-esteem than insultation...
But seriously... if it was for me, I wouldn't really mind. Unless a girl wants an honest answer from you,  telling a lie won't do too much of a damage to your friendship, nor will it end you up in a mess. Sometimes, I have to admit that girls (like me) prefer lies over truth. The truth hurts. You won't want to create social problems just because of your boldness, right?
And yeah... tell the girl that she's cute/charming/sexy/smart/healthy/clever/whatever... ... that'll help a lot.
Come to think of it, I have yet tell a guy that he's 'unattractive' before... wonder what'll happen haha
