Brief to NAU
Nanjing Audit University (NAU) situates in the city of Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, People’s Republic of China. Nearly 10,000 regular students now study in the two campuses of NAU, which covers a total area of 2200 mu. Mochou Campus is located beside the scenic Mochou Lake and Pukou on the southern slope of Lao Shan Mountain, a National Forest Park.
NAU first began as the Nanjing Institute of Finance and Trade, which was founded in 1983. In 1987, the institute was renamed to Nanjing Audit University as the result of a conference held by the National Audit Office of China and the Nanjing Municipal Government that year.
In 1991, NAU was directly affiliated with the National Audit Office of China and was upgraded in status to that of a regular accredited university in 1993. In 2000, the direct management of NAU was transferred from the National Audit Office of China to Jiangsu Provincial Government. Since its merger with the Nanjing College of Finance in 2002, NAU has become a university that is jointly sponsored by the Jiangsu Provincial Government, the National Audit Office of China and the People’s Bank of China. In 2004, NAU began to accept international students and to enroll postgraduate students. The postgraduate students were enrolled in cooperation with Nanjing University.
Currently there are 580 full-time instructors at NAU. Of these, about 200 are professors and associate professors, 103have Ph.D.’s degrees or are doctorial candidates, and nearly 300 have master’s degrees. In addition, there are 20 instructors among the faculty who have been either granted special subsidies from the State Council or have been awarded provincial and ministerial honors for their great contributions. These 20 instructors have received official recognition as a “Distinguished Teacher” by the Jiangsu Provincial Government. Still another 20 instructors have been either honored as “Excellent Leading Teachers” or selected as the members of the “333 Project” and “Qinglan Project” of Jiangsu Province. Nineteen middle-aged and younger teachers have been recognized as “Provincial Backbone Teachers.”
NAU is an institution of higher education with the principal disciplines of Economics and Management while supported by Law, Language and Literature, Science and Engineering. Now NAU has 14 teaching institutions as follows: The School of International Auditing, The School of Accounting, The School of Finance, The School of Business, The School of Administration, The School of Information Science, The School of Law and Politics and The Department of Foreign Languages, The Department of Teaching Chinese As a Foreign Language, The Department of Applied Mathematics, The Physical Education Department, JinShen College (state-owned & privately run), The College of Vocational Technology and The School of Continuing Education.
NAU has 20 regular disciplines; namely Auditing, Accounting, Financial Management, Human Resources Management, Engineering Management, Business Management, Administration, Economics, Finance, International Economics and Trade, Public Finance, E-Commerce, Marketing, Information Management and Systems, Law, English, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Computer Science and Technology, Applied Mathematics and Insurance. Among them, the disciplines of Auditing, Accounting and Finance are listed as core disciplines. Besides, NAU is among the first teaching institutions in China to offer E-Commerce courses.
NAU has set up The Training Center for senior personnel of financial system, and also serves as the training center for auditing staff and financial staff throughout China and the examination spot for autodidacts of auditing.
NAU library now has a collection of 800,000 volumes of books and 200,000 volumes of e-books, and subscribes over 1,300 Chinese and foreign newspapers and magazines and over 120 foreign periodicals. The university owns one hundred well equipped multi-media classrooms, simulant bank, simulant Stock Exchange, moot court and showroom of currency and coins.
With great concern of scientific research, NAU has set up the Auditing Information Lab of Jiangsu Province, the Research Institute of Public Administration and Effectiveness Evaluation, the Research Institute of Internal Auditing, the Research Institute of Auditing, the Research Institute of Accounting and Financial Management, the Research Institute of Finance, and the Research Institute of E-commerce. In the past 5 years, NAU has accepted a number of national scientific research assignments from the “863 Project”, the National Fund of Natural Science, the National Fund of Social Science, and the National Financial Auditing Project. Besides, more than one hundred of provincial or ministerial scientific research assignments have been appointed to NAU. The staff of NAU has issued over 3,000 theses in influential academic publications and more than 100 specialized publications and schoolbooks. NAU has directly participated in the constituting work of national laws and policies in the field of auditing. Also, the university has successfully held a number of national and international conferences. Moreover, NAU issues two publications, namely Transaction of NAU and Auditing and Economics Research, which are known as core academic journals issued both at home and abroad.
NAU firmly adheres to the belief of opening up to the outside world and has established extensive cooperation and exchange contacts successively with the auditing institutions of the US, the UK, France, Germany, Australia, Sweden, Canada, Korea, India and Pakistan, as well as other countries.
In 1997, NAU started the cooperation with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) to foster international CPAs. By the end of the year 2005, 107 NAU students were granted ACCA diplomas after passing all 14 tests required by the ACCA. More than 30 students have acquired full membership into the ACCA and over 70 students have secured quasi-memberships. More than 60 graduates have gained positions with four of the world’s famous accounting firms (PWC, KPMG, E&Y, and DTT). Thanks to the outstanding achievements of the ACCA students, in 2002, the ACCA Headquarters officially approved the ACCA training center of NAU as “Premier”. Besides, NAU has established a “3+1” program with Australian Curtin University of Technology and also a cooperating relationship with London Chamber of Commerce and Industry Examination Board (LCCIEB).
Withal, NAU undertakes Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) training and examination, also serves as the training base for Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) in Nanjing. There is also a Business Foreign-language Training Center at NAU, which trains national auditors’ English proficiency.
Over the past 22 years, NAU has formed her own educational motto, “To develop the university with unique, high quality educational features and to establish international standing.” NAU has set up a development strategy of “building the university into a famous institution that is based on high quality education and strong scientific research ability. This goal can be achieved by attracting talented people to NAU by its unique educational features.” NAU has fostered the humanistic spirit of “always earnestly working for the pursuit of truth and diligently studying for the devotion of public duty”, which is cherished as school precepts. At the same time, NAU has cultivated a virtuous, humanitarian, incorruptible, persevering, talented and noble pioneering spirit.
