i'm back from exams! nice to see so many new things happening in this forum. the usual culprits, rumuor, and also constructive ideas. NICE i personally think that the parliamentary style is not so suitable for the league. actually, if u notice, some of the aspects of english debates have been incorporated into chinese debates for the past few years. but i think we should retain what makes chinese debates unique compared to english ones. english debates are quite fun and easy, as most of the motions are only known last minute. but i also find this to be a disadvantage sometimes. being an engineering student, i had learned a lot from debate because when topics concerning history, politics or international issues come up, i have to do research on it for months to be able to perform on stage. if the motion is announced minutes before the competition starts, most ppl will come unprepared. of course, then our usual way of preparing debate will be differnt. we will have to read a wide variety of subjects in preparation for a debate. but i (and i think most other too) prefer to have a specific topic to research on. that way we can learn it better. 2nd, in english debates, POI sessions, judges tend to like those ppl who can show good confidence, but very often interpreted as arrogance in the chinese community. for example, u tend to try to cut off ppl's speech during POI. but that's supposed to be rude in chinese speaking community. and when u are not awarded the POI, debaters tend to show discontented faces, which again, is considered impolite in chinese community. (although i'm not sure if these elements are a must in english debates, it is pretty common in UK) lastly, in secondary school level, we (chinese) alr have parliamentary style debate. but i wouldn't reckon it draws good audiences. i'm not sure why. generally, i'm in all out support for the league. it's only a matter how to implement |
