english debate also depends on which style the tournament is using. there are generally four type of style, each requiring different preparation and ways of debate. in english debate, u may be surprise where the motion only release 15minutes before the real debate starts, but the debater thru thier training has accumulate knowledge and statistic to various topics. therefore it do not require heavy preparation to only one or few topics that the chinese debate do now.it provide a wider and also a more 'relax' approach. and this is why i suggested parliamentary style, first, debater do not need a long preparation. second, style, presentation, impromp-tu speaking become the core of the debate, no such thing as looking at the speech anymore. third, debaters will be trained to think fast, clear and may be able to develope more talent in a shorter time.--this is the pros of it. the cons may be, in the initial stage of the tournament, there may not be sufficient talents. besides, too short of time may intimidate people away from debating... as to the 'zi you bian' or i should say free fire round, we can always incorporate it into parliamentary style. the new style will be close to the all star match in UNITEN. my opinion is that, once the two style combined, it will includes the funs that parliamentary style has and the challege and flexibility that chinese style has. if we really want to run debate like a league, the MDL i mentioned above would be a good format to refer. besides, the World's Debate in MMU cyber starting this 27 DIS would be another good example to refer. anyway, only my 2 cents worth opinion, ready for criticisms.
